Turkey is a country that spans both Europe and Asia.
Europe since the schism of 1045AD has been split into eastern and Western Europe. Since the fall of the Byzantine empire, the capital shifted to Moscow Russia. Afterwards, The Ottoman empire had its power base in the Balkans and was largely oriented to European affairs. It was later called the sick man of Europe. The empire was lenient to its minorities and was essentially run by Greeks, Armenians and Jews. If you wanted to move up in society however, you'd have to convert to Islam. Since Attaturk's reforms of the 1920's, the country was more closely aligned to European standards. It is therefore a southeastern European country. I'd say past Ankara, further to the east, there are more stronger Asian influences. The people are of ethnically Mediterranean European stock. Politically these days under Erdogan, it is more authoritarian. Please note, the fall of the Byzantine empire was predominantly due to the fourth Crusade in 1204 and the devastation of Constantinople by the Franks.
