General Howe, commander in chief of British forces in America, who was headquartered in Boston, received intelligence that two big name rebels and members of the Sons of Liberty, John Hancock and Sam Adams were hiding out in nearby Lexington. He ordered some 2000 troops to march overland by night to Lexington to surprise and arrest the two Colonials. He also received word that the Colonials had been stockpiling weapons in Concord, a town close to Lexington and wanted to sieze these arms. Paul Revere, a Boston silversmith and Patriot along with others raced by night ahead of the troops to warn Colonial forces of the impending attack. When the British arrived in Lexington, Colonials were drawn up and waiting. After a short skirmish the Colonials drew back but reformed in larger numbers at Concord. The British were beaten back and forced to retreat all the way back to Boston. It was the first battle of the American Revolution and a rude wake-up call for the Brits.
