The world might just be better if it's mental as well as physical slavery. Harriet Tubman was symbolized by Harriet the Spy as was Malik Al Hajji Shabazz (Malcolm X) and Ole Golly was symbolized Martin Luther King Jr. until his last speech where he was assassinated. That's why the book won an award...the point was that kind of slavery wasn't so bad and you should just accept the Status quo. Yes, that kind of slavery was horrible...blowing up the earth, poverty and cowardice, all of that. Just trust Jesus...the Fitzhughs were a prominent southern family who were comfortable and really didn't care if others suffered as long as they didn't. Isn't this a grand message-MLK over Malcolm? Well, what Malcolm predicted is happening...we all are integrated without social justice and as hateful as ever unless we have sex and get high like the adults and possibly the kids did too in that book. Ole Golly was a black house negro though she was not drawn that way; Harriet Tubman was the field negro who prayed the house would burn down. Now, the ghetto turns on itself 24 7 instead of on the outside from that message. Mr. Wadelstien was her "boyfriend" and Harriet might have been from an affair with a butler or gardener...something to think about. The family drank like fishes. And yes, Marion Hawthorne is a lady Hitler. So was Janie Gibson. This was a revolution suppressing novel. That's why it won an award.
