yes it is vital and can cause the car to just quit and not start for periods of time, also if a 4 speed transmission the car will stall at stops if the locking tourque converter sticks that can be tested by unplugging the wire on the tranny

The vehicle speed sensor is located in the transaxle. If the technician forgot to pop the sensor far enough back into the hole, the tranny fluid could potentially leak out. I know, because this happened to me when I replaced my Speed sensor.
