Speaking of idiots, can't you even tell the difference between a Cherokee and a GRAND Cherokee? These two vehicles have almost nothing in common except for the drive train. The XJ Cherokee has been out of production since the end of the 2001 model year. I stand by my answer.
Also, the last year for the LAREDO package on the XJ Cherokee was 1992. I have one of them.
The radiator cooling fan is most likely not working.
Hey Dee ann==Not simply idleing the engine. If you had an extra load on it to cause it to overheat this could cause it. GoodluckJoe
Pinched or blocked transmission cooling lines
A likely cause is an internally restricted radiator.
Defective or mal-adjusted stop light switch? Usually located at the upper end of the brake pedal under dash area
Blocked radiator, low on coolant, stuck thermostat, air in cooling system

Yes, low coolant will cause it to overheat without the AC; that is not the only reason that will cause overheating however.
If the electric cooling fan(s) are not coming on that may be the problem.

water in the fuel can cause an idling motor to sputter and/or die.
A bad thermostat can cause an overheat. A bad temp sensor can show an overheat when the temperature is normal.
