The countries that have applied for membership in the European Union include Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, Turkey, and Iceland.
There are really three major levels in this process. The first level is sending in an application, in which Serbia and Albania have just done. These countries will have to have their application reviewed and accepted to move on.
The next major step is approval of this application and a candidacy spot. This is where the countries of Iceland, Turkey, Montenegro, and Macedonia are currently at. Right now, the EU is negotiating as to allow Turkey and/or Iceland to become members and it looks like Macedonia and Montenegro will have no problem with gaining membership.
The final level is acceptance, and this is where Croatia is. Croatia has been accepted for membership to the European Union and will officially join on July 1, 2013.
Also, additional information for possible candidates. The European Union is seeking Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo to join.
