If they didn't, they had very different reasons for it than "we don't want to keep our fellow men in bondage". That argument is pretty recent (less than half a millennium). Societies who were/are nomadic or on a subsistence level don't need slaves. The cost of keeping slaves (feeding them) is higher than their yield.
