The Soviet Union attacked Finland in the winter of 1939-40 and were totally embarrassed by the reaction of the Finns. Thousands of Russians were killed or wounded. They completely underestimated the resolve of the Finnish despite being outnumbered and outgunned. It was only through massive superiority in men and weapons that they finally defeated the Finnish in early 1940.
The Soviet Union, after signing a non-aggression pact with Germany in 1939, in-vaded eastern Poland, while the Germans attacked from the west and both carved out their part of Poland for themselves. The Russians also invaded all 3 Baltic States in 1940 knowing that Germany would not oppose this aggression.

There were only 12 countries in Eastern Europe by 1990. These countries were the Soviet Union, Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Cyprus, of which the Soviet Union controlled the majority of the area. Today, Eastern Europe is made up of 28 countries.
In 1991 the Soviet Union broke up. This can be characterized as total international cooperation. The economic and cultural bonds still exist in what is now many countries. The political divisions created actually protects the area from military action.

The funny thing is the same question was on my DG (Daily Geography) Soviet Union, Canda, China and United States.
