Soviet influence diminished in Western Europe
The Soviet Union invaded those countries with its massive army. Just to give you an idea about the scope of the Soviet Army, the USSR lost 8.7 million soldiers during the war and still managed to conquer half of Europe. The Soviet Union invaded Eastern Europe at the same time that the United States, the United Kingdom, and other Western Allies invaded Western Europe. The difference was that after World War II, the Western Allies withdrew a large portion of their armies and allowed the countries of Western Europe to determine their own governments. The Soviets used their military power to force Eastern European governments to be modeled after the Soviet Union and kept their armies in Eastern European countries to crush dissent.

Europe is referred to as Europe. As with any continent there are various geographical regions, so that is one way that the term Eastern Europe and Western Europe arises. More commonly it comes from the political aspect, from when countries in the east of Europe were communist and countries in the west of Europe were democracies. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union and communism, that is no longer the case, but countries in that part of Europe are still referred to as being in Eastern Europe. So it is both a geographical and political term.

The Western European countries created several organizations. NATO is one example. This organization was created by Western Europe and the United States to protect Western Europe from a possible Soviet invasion. The Western European Union is another example.
