To be perfectly honest, no countries were involved in the Civil War although the Confederacy tried to enlist both England and France's aid. They did this because they knew that both England and France bought Southern cotton and other exports. They also knew that if they could convince on of them to join them, the United States would have to recognize the Confederacy's independance. Both England and France sent military observers to the Confederacy. An example of this is the Battle of Gettysburg, a British military observer was traveling with the Confederate army. His name was Colonel Arthur Freemantle of Queen Victoria's Coldstream Guards.
