Georg Joseph Kamel is credited with originally finding the Camellia in the Philippines, which was named in his honour by Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus. However, they are found all over southern Asia, from the Himalaya to Japan and Indonesia. Research suggests that they may have been cultivated in China some 5,000 years ago, long before Kamel set eyes on it.
The Lady of the Camellias was created in 1848.

Camellias are many and varied. there are quite a few species including Camellia sinensis the plant that produces tea. There are also a large number of cultivars that you will find in nurserymens catalogues.
There is no state in Australia in which camellias cannot be grown. According to the late "Gardening Guru", Colin Campbell, camellias can be grown in the right environment in each of the states. They are able to withstand light frost. They do require shade, particularly during the hot summers, and they need some form of protection from hot, drying winds.
