The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary association of 53 independent sovereign states, most of them are former British colonies, or dependencies of these colonies The Commonwealth was first officially formed in 1931 when the Statute of Westminster gave legal recognition to the independence of dominions. Known as the "British Commonwealth", the first members were the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the Irish Free State and Dominion of Newfoundland, although Australia and New Zealand did not adopt the statute until 1942 and 1947 respectively. In 1949, the London Declaration was signed and marked the birth of the modern Commonwealth and the renaming to its present name The current 53 members of the commonwealth are: * Antigua and Barbuda * Australia * Bahamas * Bangladesh * Barbados * Belize * Botswana * Brunei * Cameroon * Canada * Cyprus * Dominica * Gambia * Ghana * Grenada * Guyana * India * Jamaica * Kenya * Kiribati * Lesotho * Malawi * Malaysia * Maldives * Malta * Mauritius * Mozambique * Namibia * Nauru * New Zealand * Nigeria * Pakistan * Papua New Guinea * Saint Kitts and Nevis * Saint Lucia * Saint Vincent and the Grenadines * Samoa * Seychelles * Sierra Leone * Singapore * Solomon Islands * South Africa * Sri Lanka * Swaziland * Tanzania * Tonga * Trinidad and Tobago * Tuvalu * Uganda * United Kingdom * Vanuatu * Zambia In addition for the Commonwealth Games some countries compete as separate nations, for example United Kingdon competes as England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey. This brings the total number of nations competing at the Commonwealth Games to 71 currently
