Fairies are a common European belief (or used to be), and the Irish people, Scandinavians and people in the Balkan area had many diverse stories and beliefs regarding the faerie folk. Note that in one way or another, similar beliefs were prevalent all over Europe in one form or another.
Similar stories of supernatural creatures occur world-wide, but the naming of "Faeries" is exclusively European.
