What were they fighting over in the hundred year war?
The French throne. The Plantagenet house of England had claims to the throne of France back to William the Conqueror of Normandy. The Norman Dukes who later became Kings of England were bound to swear fealty to the French King - and when they had gained England and become more powerful than France it was seen as humiliating for them to continue to swear fealty. And so the Hundred Years War began with the French House of Valois and the English House of Plantagenet both claiming the throne of France.

Firstly, the Bayeux Tapestry depicts that Harold swore an oath, the Bayeux Tapestry is essentially an embroidery made in the 1070's. However the Tapestry doesn't say what the oath is and moreover doesn't explain why Harold is in Normandy. Thus deeming the evidence unclear and unreliable. William of Poitiers, the chief Norman writer, wrote about the events of the oath also in 1070's, despite even being present. This again is likely to have been created to justify the Norman invasion.

Harald was then repatriated to his homeland, but reneged on his oath when Edward died. Harald claimed himself King infuriating William. William then took what he believed was rightfully his by invading England. Near Hastings in 1066, Williams Norma ns defeated Haralds Anglo-Saxons. Harald died after being hit with an arrow in his eye. Thus England fell under Norman control and the course of history was changed.
