The newly elected President of the United States takes the oath of office on January 20th, which is Inauguration Day. If the President dies, the vice president takes the oath as soon as practicable and becomes President.
If the Vice President, House Speaker, et al. is becoming President due to the death, resignation or removal from office of the President, the new President is sworn in as soon as possible.
After a Presidential election, the President is sworn in on January 20 at noon EST, even if he/she had already been President.
