The inauguration occurs at about 12:00 p.m., on January 20.

President Obama was sworn in at 12:05 p.m. EST on January 20,02009. A second oath was administered on the evening of January 21, 2009, because Chief Justice John Roberts erred when he administered the oath causing President Obama to incorrectly recite the oath.

The newly elected President of the United States takes the oath of office on January 20th, which is Inauguration Day. If the President dies, the vice president takes the oath as soon as practicable and becomes President.

If the Vice President, House Speaker, et al. is becoming President due to the death, resignation or removal from office of the President, the new President is sworn in as soon as possible.

After a Presidential election, the President is sworn in on January 20 at noon EST, even if he/she had already been President.
