They used "Greek Fire" .Similar to a sort of flame thrower, they decimated enemy ships. The formula for Greek Fire was kept so secret that even to this day, no one is absolutely sure what ingredients were used to create it. Some accounts say that once it was used the ships that were attacked still burned even while they were under water. Check the web for the latest on Greek Fire, some scientists think they have nailed the formula.

The Byzantines used an incendiary weapon which western Europeans called Greek fire in naval battles or against besiegers. The Byzantines called it sea fire, Roman fire, war fire, liquid fire or manufactured fire. It could burn while floating on water and was crucial in many Byzantine victories. It was used to repel two Arab sieges of Constantinople.

For a long time, scholars thought that it used saltpeter which was a substance which later used to provide much of the energy for gunpowder.

A second theory was that it used quicklime because some sources said that water intensified the flames. Therefore, its incendiary power was due to the explosive reaction between water and quicklime. However, this theory has been discredited because Greek fire was often poured directly on the decks of enemy ships.

Modern Historians think that it was based on petroleum, which made Greek fire similar to modern napalm. The Byzantines had access to oil from around the Black Sea or the Middle East. The Persians called it naphtha and the Greeks called Median (Persian) oil. A 9th-century Latin text mentions the ingredients of what seems to be Greek fire. It says that naphtha was the main ingredient.
