There are no deficiency diseases caused by water other than dehydration. Dehydration can be very serious as your body relies heavily on water. Symptoms such as nausea, lethargy and confusion, inability to regulate body temperature, hypotension, and in serious cases coma and even death. An easy way to see how much water you'd need a day is to figure out how many calories you need for the day. www.eatright.org is a great site to figure this out.

For every calorie, you need 1 ml of water.

If you need 1,200 calories, you need 1.2 liters.

This is better than saying 8 cups a day because a 200lb man needs more water than a little 110 lb lady and makes it more individualized

Also during heavy exercise: "A pint's a pound a world around"

For every lb you lose in sweat during your work out replace with water

If you lost 1 lb, drink 1 pint water.
