The high price of vanilla is due to the amount of work and time needed to grow, cure and ferment the bean. It can take up to 5 years from the time the vine starts growing, until the beans are ready for sale. The US is the number one purchaser of the vanilla commodity. Vanilla is best known for growing in the countries of: * Comoros * India * Indonesia * Kenya * Madagascar * Mexico * Papua New Guinea * Tahiti * Tonga * Uganda The vanilla vine grows best in tropical locations where the climate is wet and warm year round; and the temperature averages 70-90Degrees F. Vanilla vines need at least 100 inches of rain per year. To make growing vines even trickier there must be two months of a dry period so that the vines can carry a flower and form a fruit/bean. Heavy rains can reek havoc on the flowering vine by knocking of the delicate bud, without the bud no fruit can be bore. There are at least 150 species and types of vanilla vine but there are only two used to make vanilla products. The price of vanilla constantly changes. It depends on how much is available and how many companies and or individuals are willing to purchase.
