Nearly all WWII subs had to run on the surface in order to survive, diving only during emergencies or attacking. Consequently, no submarine (friend or foe) wanted to be caught on the surface by an airplane. Escort carriers launched airplanes; thus escort carriers became deadly to enemy subs.
