Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean not in Africa (or anywhere near Africa). So Jamaicans aren't African. They are dark skinned (black) but not of African heritage so they can't be an African American. ________________________________________________________________ ok let me start of by saying that i am jamaican. and u are absolutely wrong, MOST jamaican have some sort of african ancestry. thats where the color in our skin comes from. the thing is, we are not americans so it would be silly to call us african americans. african american refers to AMERICANS with african decent and only them. however we are JAMAICANS with african decent so it would make more sense to call us african jamaicans but that isnt a term so we just call ourselves black (to tell u the truth, even the indians i know in jamaica would consider themselves black over white because in our heads jamaica is a black country) (allthough it really isnt). the actual term is afro-jamaican. but as i said, we just call ourselves black people because of the african decent.

Many white Americans call themselves Irish American, Italian American, or Asian American. The United States is a country if immigrants, and the people never gave up their history or culture when they came here. It is important for African Americans or black Americans to have a sense of history or purpose. Knowing where we come from will give us the self esteem to be positive and productive American citizens. My black friends hate to be called African-Americans. They were born in the US, their moms and grandmothers were born in the USA. The liberal media and Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton used the term African-American to separate themselves from the rest of the US. Equal, but separate is their goal. That term encourages racism and resentment!
Because it sounds more respectful to African-Americans. If you call an African-American person 'black' or something related to that, they could take it as a racist comment. So it's a lot more respectful and better to call them what they are, African Americans.
