Many white Americans call themselves Irish American, Italian American, or Asian American. The United States is a country if immigrants, and the people never gave up their history or culture when they came here. It is important for African Americans or black Americans to have a sense of history or purpose. Knowing where we come from will give us the self esteem to be positive and productive American citizens.

My black friends hate to be called African-Americans. They were born in the US, their moms and grandmothers were born in the USA. The liberal media and Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton used the term African-American to separate themselves from the rest of the US. Equal, but separate is their goal. That term encourages racism and resentment!

The term "African-American" is used to acknowledge the cultural heritage and ancestry of black Americans whose origins trace back to Africa. It helps recognize and celebrate diversity within the American population. However, individuals have the choice of how they prefer to be identified, and some may simply choose to refer to themselves as "American" without the hyphenated term.
