During the American Civil War, the Northern (or, Union) government, including the various logistics divisions of the Union Army itself, worked in diverse ways to ensure that its troops were properly supplied throughout the war. Devoting considerable money, men, and material to supply-trains and depots was one basic commitment. Making use of railroads in Union and Confederate territory was yet another. Establishing guard-details and other security measures for supply-lines, including railroads, which was a necessity in light of the roving Confederate cavalry, was yet another 'solution.' Finally, the North made clever and frequent use of waterways and naval forces to bring supplies to its land-units throughout the war.
During World War 1 the American government solved the problem of supplying the troops by putting the army supply program into place. The army supply program raised taxes, and built war plants where weapons were produced on American soil.
