President Obama graduated from Columbia University in 1983 and moved to Chicago in 1985 to work for a church-based group seeking to improve living conditions in poor neighborhoods. He became convinced that having more of a legal background would help him as an advocate, so in 1989, he decided to return to school, and was accepted to Harvard Law School. He graduated, with academic honors, in 1991. Mr. Obama was a professor of law at the University of Chicago Law School for twelve years. He next went into politics, serving in the Illinois state house (where he was re-elected several times) and then becoming a United States Senator. He served in that capacity till he decided to run for president.
