When Franklin attended the convention he was the oldest man there at 71 years old and because of his gout was carried in on a Sudan chair carried by local jail inmates. He was still very sharp mentally and contributed a great deal to the discussion. The only problem with him that every evening after the convention closed for the day he liked to go to the pub for an ale or two. The convention agreed to keep the discussion on the events private and not to disclose what was happening, but a few ales in Franklin meant he would talk so a delegate was assigned to be with him and get him home when he started to talk about the convention.
