In his young adulthood, Washington was a surveyor and served as a British officer in the French and Indian War. He inherited a plantation from his father which he improved. He also became a major whiskey distiller. He was active in the independence movement, served as a Virginia delegate in the various congresses and was Commander-in-chief of Colonial military forces during the War for Independence.
