In Genesis 22 God tested Abraham's faith by having Abraham take his son (Issac) to the land of Moriah, and offer him as a burnt offering. Although, in the end, God provides a different offering. The three things God did are mentioned in the verses below. Firstly He 'tempted' or tested him. Then when Abraham had demonstrated he was intent on obedience and had thus passed the test God stopped him from carrying our the sacrifice of Isaac. Finally God blessed Abraham, the message being passed on by the 'Angel of the Lord.'

1And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. 2And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

11And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. 12And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. 13And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

15And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, 16And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: 17That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; 18And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

How do we know that God was testing Abraham's faith?

It is stated explicitly in Genesis 22:1.Abraham's tests:Abraham was persecuted and endangered by Nimrod for speaking against idolatry. His wife was abducted by Pharaoh (Genesis ch.12) and by Avimelekh the Philistine (Genesis ch.20). He was compelled to go into battle to rescue his nephew (Genesis ch.14). He was tested by God to see whom he loved more: his son Isaac, or God (Genesis ch.22). And his wife was barren for many decades (Genesis ch.11, 15 and 16). Also, until he built up a circle of disciples, he was alone as a monotheist in a sea of idolaters.See also:A biography of AbrahamWhy did God test Abraham?Jewish history timeline

What did Abraham do that was good?

Abraham single-handedly opposed the ubiquitous idolatry of Nimrod. Wherever he went, he taught about the One God; so much so that he was revered as a Prince of God (Genesis ch.23). This act of public teaching is what is meant by "he called out in the name of the Lord" (Genesis ch.12). Abraham's fear of God was unparalled (Genesis ch.22).
