Gregor Mendel cultivated and tested 29,000 pea plants to study the different characteristics in plants. He chose pea plants because the offspring of pea plants could be quickly produced.

He cross fertilized pea plants that had opposite characters, for example -

tall with short

smooth with wrinkled

green seeded variety with yellow seeded variety

After analyzing the results he was able to form two important laws in genetics - Law of Segregation and Law of Independent Assortment.
