Hitler seen the Communists as a threat to his position because Left-Wing movements were growing in numbers throughout Europe. The Reichstag was burnt down and a Dutch Communist was found responsible for the crime. Hitler used this as a catalyst against the Communists, proclaiming that this was the extent they would go to in achieving power, burning down a monumental building in German history. It is believed and in fact is probably true that Hitlers Stormtroopers (SA) were responsible for the fire and the Dutch Communist was forced to take the blame or even payed off by the Nazis!
