After the death of Aristotle Onassis, her second husband, Jackie returned to NYC and her apartment at 1040 Fifth Avenue. She became a book editor at age 46--first with Viking, then Doubleday and was involved in the publication of books on Michael Jackson, ballerina Gelsey Kirkland, Joseph Campbell's "The Power of the Myth," and "The Russian Style," among many others. Her personal life changed for the better when she began dating and ultimately lived with Maurice Templesman, an investment advisor who was also closely linked to DeBeers diamond importer operations. While "MT," as she called him, never formally divorced his wife, Lily, he and Jackie, by all accounts, lived a simple, peaceful life together both at 1040 and Red Gate Farm, the estate she built on Martha's Vineyard. The final year of her life was turbulent as she battled lymphoma. She endured radiation treatments and even having a shunt put in her brain to directly administer chemotherapy once the cancer had spread. She died on May 19th, 1994, leaving an estate of about $35 million dollars to her two children, John and Caroline.

She was an assistant editor for Viking Press and Doubleday, serving from the time her second husband died in 1975, until her death in 1994. She led the effort to save the Grand Terminal Station from demolition, and was present at both dedication ceremonies for the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, with her children.
