Jesus's answer was very much in line with the Pharisees: He said Deuteronomy 6:4-5, or rather, he quoted that (the system of chapter and verse numbers hadn't yet been invented). That reads "Hear, O Israel: The Lord your God the Lord is one; and you should love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength." (Different gospels state the quote differently, but they're obviously all references to this passage.) The Pharisees were a link in the rabbinic tradition that leads to modern Judaism. The liturgy they passed on to the present asks every Jew to repeat this exact text three times a day as a central element of the daily prayer cycle.
