On June 19, 1865, a Union gunboat sailed into Galveston, Texas. The commander marched to the Court House and took down the Confederate Flag. He then ordered that the Emancipation Proclamation be read from the steps of every court house in Texas. At that point the Civil War and slavery ended in Old Dixie.
African Americans celebrate that date as Juneteen. Slavery remained in the 4 border states until November of that year.

Of course, the Confederate Army did not win the war, and were freed anyway.
