With Benjamin Rush he studied how to properly apply medicine, how to recognize a disease, etc. With Ellicott, he learned how to recognize direction using the positions of astrological bodies, how to calculate logitude, latitude and area, etc. With Barton, he learned how to recognize plants that could be edible, used for medicine, how categorize plants and how to recognize plants that were dangerous or poisonous. With Patterson, he learned how to measure depth, length, width, how to read a thermometer, etc.
