Marco polo can be described as a "commercial explorer". He was a Venetian who embarked on a long and tedious journey to China. He had to cross the Pamirs and the Gobi Desert. His caravan opened the eyes of Europe to the vast wealth and products that the Chinese had made. Before Marco Polo little was known about China in Europe so he provided valuable information to Europeans and interacted in a friendly manner to the Chinese people he visited. New trade and trade routes would develop with China in part due to Polo's expedition.
