Young Barack Obama had just spent several years living and studying in Indonesia, when his mother remarried. But the situation in that country was unstable, and his mother wanted him to return to Hawaii. So, he went back there, to live with his maternal grandmother and grandfather, and attended the Punahou School in Honolulu, where he was befriended and mentored by his 5th grade teacher Ms. Hefty, whom he later praised during a 2015 ceremony that honored great teachers.
