The story of Paul Revere began in 1861 when Longfellow wrote his poem on the eve of the Civil War. He was trying to inspire patriotism by using Paul Revere in his poem. He was NOT writing history as fact, but it was taken as fact and used in textbooks later.

They warned the colonists of the Bristish attack on Lexinton and Concord, so that they can be prepared. If they did not do that, Bristish would attack at us, probably stole our weapons, etc for being unaware of it.

Listen, my children, and you shall hear. Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere, and William Dawes and Samuel Prescott. The three men rode to warn the revolutionaries at Lexington and Concord Massachusetts of the approaching British Army. Paul Revere is revered (pun intended) for his part in the action but he was captured by the British before he could reach Concord. The contributions of the other two was greater than that of Revere but, thanks to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Revere is famous and the other two almost unknown.
