When he was 16 years of age, Maewyn Succat (the future Saint Patrick) was abducted from his home in Roman Britain and taken as a slave to Ireland. He was a shepherd for six years and finally escaped when he was 22 years of age and eventually ended up back home in Britain. He then moved to Europe and studied to become a priest in France and Italy. Pope Celestine I named him a bishop and sent him back to Ireland as a missionary where he spend the rest of his life.

Before becoming a priest, Saint Patrick was captured by Irish pirates at a young age and taken to Ireland as a slave. During his captivity, he worked as a shepherd. It was during this time that he found solace in his faith, which eventually led him to becoming a priest and a missionary to Ireland.
