As the period of the American Revolutionary War drew near. Washington, commanded Virginia's frontier troops, as a colonel, from 1755-1758. In 1774, he was an elected delegate to the First Continental Congress. Then, in 1775, Washington was elected as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress.
On June 15, 1775, George Washington was elected as commander in chief of the Continental Army. Washington and his men won the last major battle of the Revolutionary War on October 19, 1781. This was the Battle of Yorktown, in which the British commander Cornwallis, and his troops surrendered to George Washington. It was this battle, that officially ended the American Revolutionary War.
Then, on May 25, 1787, George Washington was elected the president of the Constitutional Convention. Washington would be elected as the first President of the United States in 1789, and reelected to a second term in 1792. On September 19, 1796, George Washington published his Farewell Address, refusing a third term.
On July 4, 1798, Washington was commissioned lieutenant general and commander in chief of the new United States Army. It would be a short-lived honor, for George Washington would die on December 14, 1799.
