When Claudius became emperor in 41, Vespasian was appointed commander of Legio II Augusta, in Germania,. In 43, he participated to the invasion of Britain with his legion. He subdued the modern counties of Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, securing the tin mines of Cornwall and the silver and lead mines of Somerset.
In 63 he was governor of the Africa Province.
In 66 he was sent to suppress the Great Jewish Revolt in Judaea, with two legions, eight cavalry squadrons and ten auxiliary cohorts. His son joined with his army from Alexandria. Vespasian was against to besieging Jerusalem, believing that too many Roman troops would be lost. When he returned to Rome to become emperor, Titus besieged the city, seized it, looted it, destroyed the Second Temple and took 10,000 slaves.
Meanwhile Nero had become emperor. When he died there was what had been called the Year of the Four Emperors (68). In this year there were civil wars in which three emperors took power for brief time. Galba was murdered by Otho, who was defeated by Vitellius. Otho's supporters, looking for another candidate to support, settled on Vespasian who became the fourth emperor of that year and retained power after defeating Vitellius. He was emperor for ten years.
Vespasian helped to rebuild Rome after the civil wars. He built the temple of Peace and the temple to the Deified Claudius. In 70 he began the construction of the Colosseum, which was finished by his son and successor Titus after his death. This project was funded using funds from the spoils of the Jewish Temple after the Siege of Jerusalem. In 75 he erected a colossal statue of Apollo, begun under Nero. In 77 Vespasian made Agricola governor of Britannia and got him to complete the conquest of this island. He reached as far as Scotland. Under his rule Propaganda increased. New buildings had inscriptions praising him and condemning previous emperors. The works of historians had to be approved by him. This ensured that there would be no bias against him.
Vespasian has been called by some writers "the man who saved Rome". When he came into power the empire was just about bankrupt due to Nero's expenditures and the civil wars that followed Nero's exit. He put the empire on an austerity program and put a tax on just about everything--even urine. After his son, Titus, brought back the loot from Jerusalem, the finances were in order and he began his building projects. Among them the Colosseum.

Vespasian glorified Rome by commissioning the construction of the Colosseum. One of the purposes of this was to celebrate Rome's victory in the First Roman-Jewish War. The project was funded with the spoils of that war. Incidentally, the Colosseum was actually Flavian Amphitheatre (it was named after the Flavian dynasty which Vespasian initiated. Colosseum was a nickname which was used later in history and is thought to originated from the Colossus, a colossal statue of the god Apollo ordered by Vespasian's predecessor, Nero.Vespasian had it erected.
