A merchant's wife did everything any wife did. She kept the house, cooked the meals, had children and raised them, made and mended clothing. She might have had and tended the garden, a cow, a pig and/or a lamb; maybe even a goat. She worked with her husband as well; caring for the store when he was gone. She might have spun thread, made candles, and other items. If the family was rich enough to own a slave or two, she may have directed the slaves activities.

She was every bit as busy as a modern women without any modern appliances. In addition she risked dying in child birth because the germ theory was not understood until the latter part of the 19th Century. (However, chances improved if she had a midwife attended her as midwives, in general, at least washed their hands.
