It was calculated that the Loyalists amounted to some 500,000 (men, women and children) among about 2,500,000 inhabitants of the colonies.

After the war about 15 - 20% of the Loyalists emigrated to other parts of the British Empire, especially towards Canada and New Brunswick.

Therefore the majority of them remained in America and were allowed to be citizens of the new country.
