General Grant's terms were generous. The Confederate soldiers had to lay down their arms, but then were free to go home. They were also given rations upon surrender. Approximately 25,000 rations were made available.

With remarkable generosity.

He said that if they handed in their weapons and swore the oath never to take up arms against the USA again, they could go home in peace and not face persecution.

Both Grant and Lee seemed to realise that this was a historic moment, which called for a particularnobility of action.

Also, Lincoln had told his Generals "Let 'em up easy".
