After James Madison retired from the official political positions, he served Thomas Jefferson's University of Virginia as a member of the board of visitors and then as the dean. In 1938, Madison was honored with the changing of the State Teachers College at Harrisonburg name to Madison College then that was changed in 1976 to James Madison University.
