"The best Injun is a dead Injun". And apart from that, they believed that the Native Americans were very selfish and totally unreasonable to consider most of America as their own land. A clever combination of military force, promises that were, shall we say, not always kept by the US Government and small print in Treaties with the Indians soon enough taught them what's what.
