What did people do after the civil war?

The soldiers had the worst of it after the Civil War. Many were stranded out in the wilderness, and, upon hearing their officers read the declaration of war's end, did not know where to go. Many died before getting home, exhausted and without food (the army stopped supplying food immediately after the war ended). This fate was the same for both Union and Confederate soldiers. Even if they did get home, there were often severed family ties that needed mending, or people who were furious that they had fought at all who needed placating. This was especially true in border states like Missouri.
