Superchargers ( air compressors on the carburetor or intake manifold) were developed to boost the power at higher altitudes by force-ramming in the induction air. also carburetor-manifold heaters to prevent icing in the carburetors, these are not really (Hot rod) performance devices- the Carb or Manifold heat, but survival type devices for the engines at certain adverse conditions such as winter or high altitude. the Carburetor ( aka Manifold) heat is also used on -Trucks. It is not used in the summer months for obvious reasons- except maybe in Alaska. irt pre-heats the carburetor or manifold if on a diesel. an analogous Railroad device is the Feed Water Heater, used on modern ( post twenties) Steam locomotives and popular in Russia and Canada for obvious reasons, don:t Freeze up!
