Apollo 11 decided to take a voyage to the moon because they wanted to be the first group on Earth to take men to and from the moon safely, as they thought it would make a huge jump in the National Spaceunits timeline and history. And it did.

Other reasons from the community:

  1. To "catch up" with the Russians. Russians had launched Sputnik, the first satellite - a radio transmitter-relay station. Yuri (gar gaerrin) sp? was the first man in space.
  2. To distract from political problems - issues at home in the U.S. (Civil Rights, Race Riots, Watts burning, War protest, Kent State, etc.)
  3. To develop weapons and threaten other nations in response to perceived threats to the U.S. (Cuban Missile crisis). The US also was testing nuclear bombs in Nevada as the war raged in southeast Asia and Russians put missiles in Cuba. The Apollo 11mission did prove that OUR missiles WILL deliver their payloads.
  4. To further science, to learn about the universe. The above reasons explain why we have NOT gone back to the moon. The existing NASA missions put communication satellites in orbit, and no focuses on developing "critical" technology.

The first thing that hit the surface after Neil Armstrong opened the hatch was a small trashbag that Armstrong threw under the left side of the lunar module. The first photo Armstrong shot of the surface of the moon shows the small trashbag under the LM.

They also left the flag of the United States. Armstrong shot photos of Aldrin saluting the flag, but there are no photos of Armstrong saluting the flag. The flag was blown away when the Eagle lifted off from the moon.

Apollo 11 left a simpler version of the Apollo lunar scientific experiment package called the Early Apollo Surface Experiments Package (EASEP). Since there was only one 2 hour 40 minute EVA planned, the crew would not have enough time to deploy a full ALSEP, which usually took one to two hours to deploy. Both packages were stored in the LM's SEQ bay.

Engineers designed the seismometer to deploy with one squeeze handle, and the Laser Ranging Retro Reflector (LRRR) also deployed within ten minutes. Despite the simpler design, the seismometer was sensitive enough to detect Neil Armstrong's movements during sleep.

The only other experiment they did was a sheet of foil that collected solar particles in space. The foil itself was returned to earth, but the pole on which the foil hung stayed behind on the moon.

They also left their TV camera on the lunar surface, which had been used previously on Apollo 7 and Apollo 10.

After they finished walking on the moon, they repressurized the lunar module and took off their helmets, gloves, outer boots and backpacks. Then they opened the hatch again and threw away their outer helmets, boots and backpacks along with cameras and anything else they didn't need to bring back to earth.

All those things are still on the lunar surface.
