Best Answer
It is better to say tribes. There were many Germanic tribes.

In the second century AD, the Marcomanni, Quadi, Iazyges, Naristi, Chatti, Chauci, Langobardi, Hermunduri, Suebi, Buri, Vandals, and Bastarnae attacked the Roman Empire from across the River Danube and the Roman province of Dacia (which was to the north of this river). The Marcomanni even reached the northeast of Italy. They were defeated by the emperor Marcus Aurelius in the long-drawn Marcomannic Wars. In the third century AD the Heruli and the Goths ravaged the eastern part of the Roman Empire several times and the Franks and the Alemanni ravaged northern Gaul. The latter two also ravaged Gaul in the fourth century. The Alemanni also attacked Italy. In the in the fifth century the Vandals and Sueves invaded Gaul and then moved to Spain. The Sueves remained in Spain and the Vandals went on to conquer north-western Africa. The Burgundians moved to eastern France. The Alemanni took over north-eastern France (Alsace and Lorraine). The Visigoths, who had been allowed to settle in the eastern part of the empire by the Romans, moved to south-western France and then took over Hispania (Spain and Portugal). The Franks expanded their kingdom in Belgium and northern France into central France and then took over the whole of France and the lands of the Alemanni in Switzerland and southern Germany. The Ostrogoths were sent to Italy by the eastern Roman Emperor to depose a usurper and they set up their kingdom in Italy and the former Yugoslavia. The Angles, Saxons, Jure and Frisians migrated to Britain in waves and took it over.
