Most of them were living in ghettos. Very few were in hiding. After all, hiding for a long time is difficult.

The Jews were kept in concentration camps and death camps in different places in Nazi-occupied territory.

In Poland, from early 1940 onwards, the Jews were herded into ghettos, which were then sealed off. The food allowed into the ghettos was grossly insufficient. Later, the Jews were transported from the ghettos to the extermination camps.

They were made to stay in concentration camps, also known as death camps where they were forced to do gruelling work but were gassed after they were completely fatigued. The most famous concentration camp, which is still open as to comemerate these brave people is called Auschwitz.
