The Romans had two different systems. One system was to count the years "Ab Urbe Conditiae", which means From the Founding of the City. That, at least according to legend, was in 753 BC by our reckoning. More often though they designated a year by who held various public offices and, in particular, the consulship. Thus they would say that something happened, "in the year of the consulship of Marcus Junius" and everybody knew what was meant. During the imperial period they would also refer to the (something)th year of the reign of the emperor so and so.
The Romans called the year in which they lived after the names of the Counsuls. Such as, Marcus was born in the counsulship of Casar and Balbus.
