In Roman Times there was no Scotland, but it was called Caledonia and was made of tribes. In the summer of AD84 some of the tribes joined forces against the Romans. The Caledonians had 30,000 warriors which was about twice as many as the Romans, but the Romans were better organized and they defeated the Caledonia army. After the battle most of the Caledonia people accepted the Romans occupation. Yet some of the northern tribes kept fighting the Romans. To protect themselves they built walls from the northern tribes. In AD122 Hadrian had a wall built between Roman Britain and Caledonia and they also built forts. Despite the walls and fort the Romans never really settled in the north. Attacks along the wall increased in AD410 and the Romans finally packed up and left. Barbarian tribes were attacking Rome and the troops were needed to defend the city.
When the Romans conquered Britain, they gave them a share in their prosperity, and brought their way of life. They also imposed Roman taxes.
